Math-Ch. 5-Money and Time
What does your child know about money?
Does your child know how to tell time? Do they know what time it will be in 2 1/2 hours?

We will be studying time and money in math, so please practice at home.
In conjunction with chapter 5, we will start to learn our facts. Please drill and practice at home.

English

We will continue to study adjectives too.

Writing
We will be studying point of view and writing.

We will start a descriptive story from the "Turkey's Point of View."

Spelling
L. 11 test and homework -due Th. 11/19/09.


Reading
We will be talking about author's purpose.
Book Reports-
The students will be getting information about their next book report on Monday. They should be looking for a mystery or realistic fiction book.
They will have to read the book, write a summary on notecards, complete a summary poster, and present.
Independent Reading Folders
Folders are due Tuesday, 12/1 and the
reading party will be Wednesday, 12/2.
Social Studies
We are studying modern day DG.

We will be working on a timeline and DG.


Science
The students did a great job on their Matter tests!

You should have looked over the scores of their last 4 writing assignments, when the binders came home. The binders will come home every couple weeks.
Please review work, sign and return with a 2 days. Thanks!
Writing paragraph is due on Monday, 10/5.


Reading-Strategy-Predicting

Book Report Alert
The students were assigned a book report project.
Please read over the book report project and develop a timeline that would work for you and your child.
ALL reports and posters are due on October 19th.
The students will share their poster with the class.
They may dress up as a character in the book, if they want or bring in prompts that support their book!

Social Studies
Chapter 12-Government.
Then we will transition into our Downers Grove Unit!

Science
We are starting our chapter on Matter.

Each week there will be a student picked to be student of the week. This student will bring in photos, magazine pictures, or drawings/ descriptions about themselves. The categories that they will cover are:
Me
My Family
Special Friends
My Favorite Foods
Where I Live
Thing I Like to Do
When I Grow Up I'd Like to
My Favorite Toys

The schedule for the week will be:
Monday - put up pictures and decorate the bulletin board
Tuesday - share your board with class
Wednesday - Read your favorite book to the class (about 10 minute limit)
Thursday - Bring a favorite show and tell item to share with class


Spelling
Lesson 2 book assignment is due on Thursday, Sept. 10th!
Test-Lesson 1-due Thurs., Sept. 10th!
Thursday - test will be given and pre-test for following week
ALL Lesson homework due
**If your child passes the pre-test, the will receive a different list of activities and a different word list, on most weeks.



English/Writing
Chapter 1-"What is a Sentence?"

We will begin this next week.

ENGLISH TEST-UNIT 1 is scheduled for Friday, 9/11!


We will start working in our cursive handwriting books next week. I will encourage the students to practice using cursive in their spelling work. I will require cursive in January. Thanks!


Reading

We will study the different reading strategies throughout the year. The first one that we will focus on is Visualization.
We are reading Dogzilla and 10 True Animal Stories for this strategy!



Science

We will start with science inquiry skills.

Social Studies

In social studies, the first unit will be about maps and map skills.

We talked about:
